THE DRAMA OF NECESSITY

.

EG:  LE CORBUSIER - VILLA LA ROCHE, SQ. DU DOCTEUR BLANCHE, PARIS XVIe - 1923

WALL LAMP PROJECTING OVER THE ENTRY TO THE L1 TO L2 ACCESS RAMP

This is a 'Design' example of an object that is intentionally stripped of any references/materials from outside its most immediate and basic (physical) functionings. It is an analogue of improvisations made during the early stages of self-provision of a dwelling, which are necessarily as direct and minimal as possible. It shares with many of the improvised objects shown throughout this book the value of achieving experiential immediacy and efficacy by forming the most economical solution to any presented need.

LE CORBUSIER - VILLA LA ROCHE: INTERIOR - WALL LAMP

(pic c1975 / to NNE?)

Above the start of the wall-ramp in Dr. Roche’s art-gallery is a naked light bulb in a mass-manufactured brass fitting supported by a common steel tube #m out from flat wall. The starkly different character of these four ordinary objects, their harsh undisguised functioning and necessity of relating, is revealed as blatant yet uncontrived drama...(the bulb’s glare is even painful - but all the more event !)
