EG:  RICADO BOFILL - "LA FABRICA", AVENIDA DE LA INDUSTRIA, SANT JUST DESVERN, BARCELONA - 1973-75 (pics 12-06)

This is a 'design' example, an intentional architectural experience - not, as in the occupied Silo, an unintended affective 'spinoff' of pragmatism. This, as it were, combines into a single dwelling the 18C park's romantic 'ruin' and its classical house.

This edifice intentionally presents a confrontation of the accoutrements and delicacy of home and personal work, with the brutality of a 'filthy and poisonous' wrecked industrial plant, in a way that enhances by contrast the associational affectiveness of both. One witnesses the powerful excitement of overcoming and taming the beast: forcing this hulk into a new and quite different region, scale, complexity of use; exposing the dramatic beauty of its horror and desolation as artifact (displaying its features like vast 'trophies' and detailed 'medallions'); presenting the form-complexifying wrought by damage and decay (just as it does the unfettered growth-forms of certain plants) as an outer aesthetic limit, in contrast to the clearly ordered facilities for intentional mental work and sustaining comfort.
